Beginning in 1840, “Gallups Grove,” played host to popular family picnics and clambakes. Situated on the banks of the Connecticut River, the name was changed to “Riverside” in 1912. Its new owner, Henry J. Perkings, transformed the land into an amusement park that held an enormous “sanitary bathing pool” and a number of mechanical rides. In 1938, Edward Carroll, Sr., leased Riverside’s adjoining parking lot to open Massachusetts’s second drive in theater. Soon thereafter, Mr. Carroll purchased the park. Over the years, the park gained rides such as the “Thunderbolt” wooden roller coaster and “Colossus,” a 150-foot Giant Ferris Wheel.
In 1997, Edward Carroll Jr. sold Riverside, to Premier Parks. Renovations included the newly added Island Kingdom Water Park, among others. Riverside officially became Six Flags New England on December 8, 1999. Popular coasters like SUPERMAN: Ride of Steel and BATMAN: the DARK KNIGHT soon joined the park’s line of attractions. In addition, younger children and families can now enjoy Wiggles World, Thomas Town and Looney Tunes Movie Town. The excitement continued in 2003 with the expanding Island Kingdom Water Park renamed “Hurricane Harbor.” In 2005 Six Flags New England opened two new rides--One Wet, One Wild! Pandemonium and the Typhoon water coaster added thrills that could be shared with friends and family.
2006 brought the addtion of two more new rides, Catapult and Splash Water Falls! Splash Water Falls, the ultimate in family fun, takes riders through splashy thrills as their boats spin continuously! Want to fly through the New England skies? Catapult offers highflying thrills as you swat through the sky at 105 feet.
In 2007, Six Flags New England expanded yet again with the addition of two new children's areas! The Wiggles launched the extremely popular "Wiggles World!" "Wiggles World" includes specially themed rides and attractions, including The Big Red Car Ride, Dorothy's Rosy Tea Cups and the S.S. Feathersword. Our second children's area added in 2007 was Thomas Town! All aboard, this exciting play area is designed to entertain children of all ages, and is centered around a train ride on a Thomas the Tank Engine replica that brings guests on a journey through Thomas' mythical home on the Island of Sodor.
